SEQ Bulletin – January 2018

Welcome to a new Rogaining year!

We have a very big calendar of events planned this year, under the new ‘Rogaining Queensland’ banner.
The Event Calendar is here: qldrogaine.asn.au/event-calendar/
Although the calendar includes events run by both Raid Adventures and QRA, the Volunteer Rewards system remains very much the same as it has operated in previous years – if you volunteer at a QRA or Raid Adventures event (and give up the ability to compete at that event), you can earn a $50 credit towards entry in another QRA or Raid Adventures event within the following 12 months. Furthermore, Raid Adventures are offering pre-entry for those who have recently volunteered to popular events that sell out fast (such as the Rogue Raid).
As announced previously, starting in 2018, QRA membership fees will not be levied. An individual automatically becomes a member of the Association by participating in a QRA event.

The 2018 Australasian Rogaining Championships – 25/26 August
If you haven’t yet seen it, check out the event website. We are very excited about hosting this event this year and we expect it to be the biggest rogaine ever held in South East Queensland. The previous record was set the last time the Australian Champs came to SEQ in 2005, with 396 competitors in total. Please lock in the date, spread the word, and if you can’t compete please think about volunteering to help. Remember, this event is not just for elites, it’s a celebration for the whole rogaining community and open to all. Entries will be opening soon.

The location of the event has just been announced! The championships will be held in the Manumbar area in the Gympie region. The Gympie Regional Council have generously offered to provide financial support to the event. Click here for details.

Upcoming Events
The following events now open for entry on the Rogaining Queensland Calendar:

17 February 2018 Bayside Paddlegaine This is a kayaking event (kayaks are provided) to be held in the southern Moreton Bay islands. The event is 4 hours in duration, but as always you can choose yourselves how far and how long you go out for. There will also be just enough trekking or running to stretch your legs. The event is now 75% full so get in quick!
03 March 2018 Upside Down Rogaine The annual Upside-Down rogaine (held at night) is a favourite for many and a great chance to test your navigation skills. This year’s event – ‘Creeping Round Cressbrook’ – is being held at Lake Cressbrook, about 1.5 hours drive NW of Brisbane. Breakfast will be provided after the finish of the event, followed by the Qld Rogaine Association AGM.
24 March 2018 Training Day Our annual training day to be held at Bunyaville State Forest just 12km from the Brisbane CBD. The program is aimed at both novice and semi-experienced rogainers. The day will be adapted to the number of participants, and their level of navigation experience. The programme will consist of both theory and hands on exercises.
25 March 2018 Mini Rogaine Our 3hr Mini-Rogaine this year, ‘Scarpering on the Escarpment’, will be held near Mt Cotton, a short drive SE of Brisbane. This 3hr event is perfect for beginners, but will also test the endurance and navigation of experienced racers – can you clean up the course and make it back before anyone else?? This event is held on the day after the Training Day.
15 April 2018 Colts Academy In an Australian first, the Colts Academy is a youth development pathway into Adventure Racing. The day is structured around a skills clinic based on the core disciplines of adventure racing: navigation (hosted by Orienteering QLD), mountain biking (hosted by Bike On) and kayaking (hosted by Paddle Perfect), followed by a practice event. So if you are a young person interested in getting into the sport, grab a bunch of friends, throw a team together for the Colts Raid (see below) and sign up for the Colts Academy.

22 April 2018 Colts Raid (youth event) Australia’s first youth only Adventure Race. Building off the Colts Academy youth development program, the Colts Raid represents a pathway for youth to put their navigational and adventure racing skills to the test.  And once you’ve tried your hand at the Colts Raid, why not step it up to one of the longer format Raid races!
22 April 2018 Scatter Raid The Scatter Raid is an all new event in the Raid Adventures line up, adopting a scatter scoring format. Open to teams of 2 or Solo entrants, competitors will race to collect as many check points (of equal value) as possible over a 3 hour time period. The scatter course introduces a different element of strategy to the race, with teams able to work to their strengths across the disciplines of mountain biking, kayaking and running. Note that this is a stand alone event run on the same day and course as the Colts Raid.
05 May 2018 Rogue Raid 2018 will represent the ninth running of the Rogue Raid which has grown to be Australia’s largest 24 hour adventure race. Entries are now full for the Rogue Raid 24 Hour and the waitlist has opened.  Often teams on the waitlist will be offered a place closer to the race as other teams withdraw due to injury, etc. Entries are still open in the 6 hour Rogue Raid option.
13 May 2018 Cyclegaine Organise your team and come along for the ‘Wine Country Wander’ – a day of fun in the beautiful Granite Belt and wine country region. The event map includes State Forest areas with a network of roads, tracks and fire trails. Enjoy a meal after the event (included in your entry fee) and stay a while to explore the surrounding area.

QRA AGM 2018
The AGM of the Association will be held after breakfast at the conclusion of the Upside Down at Lake Cressbrook. If you have any interest in helping on the Committee this year please let us know.

Questgaines are back!
Following on from the popular Night Nav series, Questgaines are back for a new season this year. These 1-hour mini-rogaines can be done as individuals or in a group, and best of all, they’re free! Check out the blog for information.

Australian MTBO Championships
The 2018 Australian MTBO Championships will be held in SE Queensland on 19 and 20 May this year. There will be a Sprint and a Middle Distance event on the Saturday with a Long Distance event on Sunday morning. All events are between 30 and 60 minutes’ drive north of Brisbane. Here is a chance to test yourself against the best MTBO riders in Australia or just to have fun on some top class courses. Details can be found at http://www.qld-mtbo-champs.com.au/

SEQ Rogainer of the Year Competition
Liam St Pierre and Kim Beckinsale won our inaugural competition last year, and will be presented with (rather modest) prizes at an event in early 2018. Full results are now on the QRA website. We have tweaked the points system this year, to make it a bit simpler, see this document for details. Who will be our winners this year?

Call for Volunteers!
The rogaining association and all QRA events are run entirely by volunteers. We actually need all QRA members to volunteer some time each year to sustain the sport. If you are interested in organising or assisting in running a rogaine please get in touch, it’s a fantastic opportunity to explore Queensland and practice your nav all while giving back to the organisation.
The Rogaining Queensland Event Calendar is available at qldrogaine.asn.au/event-calendar/. The volunteer page on the website has a description of each of the event volunteer roles. Please send an email to volunteer@qldrogaine.asn.au to put your hand up. It’s a lot of fun, you learn heaps about rogaining and we have many experienced hands to support you.
There are also vacancies on the QRA committee. The Land Access Coordinator and Health and Safety Officer positions are vacant and we always welcome general committee member nominations too. If you have any interest in a particular role please get in touch via volunteer@qldrogaine.asn.au.

Volunteer Rewards Policy
Volunteers at QRA or Raid Adventures events who have contributed at least a full day to an event and have given up their opportunity to compete are offered a $50 credit towards entry in a QRA or Raid Adventures event of their choosing within the following 12 months. A list of people who have earned rewards is on the website. The reward can be claimed by emailing the website administrators (support@qldrogaine.asn.au) when entering an event.

Rogaining around the world…
There will be no World Rogaining Championships in 2018. The 2019 event has been awarded to Spain, and the event website is now available. The 2020 event has been awarded to the USA. From 2020 onwards, the World Rogaining Championships will be held every second year.
The first 24hr rogaine to be held in Romainia will be held on 30 June 2018: https://rogaining.ro/en/

…and across Australia…
A list of upcoming interstate rogaines can be found at rogaining.org.au/events.

Rogaining Stories
We’re always keen to hear from QRA members about your rogaining or other outdoor experiences. Please share your stories by posting on the wall of the official QRA Facebook page. Don’t forget to ‘like’ our Facebook page. If you don’t have access to these sites and would like to share some news, send it to bulletins@qldrogaine.asn.au and we will post it.

Hope to see you at a QRA event, soon.
Paul Guard
QRA President
