SEQ Bulletin – January 2020

Welcome to a new rogaining year!
We have a great calendar of events lined up again this year, both foot and paddle rogaines (delivered by you – the volunteer members of QRA) and multi-discipline Raid events (delivered by Raid Adventures, semi-commercial but still relying heavily on volunteers from QRA). We hope you have a great year of adventures, and look forward to seeing you at the events. Please help out the organisers where you can – even if it is just collecting a few controls after the event.

First Event – Bayside Paddlegaine 22 Feb – Entries Open!
Final touches are going onto this years paddlegaine course, and the organisers feel it is one of the best yet!  With the optimal route choice far from obvious, close attention will be required from teams wanting to win this one. As always however, all teams will find the location a stunning place to kayak!  The paddlegaine has always sold out in the past, and with team numbers strictly capped due to available kayaks, get your entry in to avoid disappointment!

Queensland Rogaining Association AGM – 22 Feb
The AGM this year will be held immediately after the end of the Paddlegaine. Please hang around after presentations to take part – it won’t take much of your time. There will be a couple of changes in the QRA leadership roles and if you have any interest in helping out on the Committee in any capacity please do get in touch, we’d love to hear from you.

The Nerangarama 6hr Rogaine – 14 March
We’re kicking the rogaining year off with something a bit different from our usual upside-down: a 6 hour day-night event in Nerang. Maps will be handed out at midday, with a 2pm start and 8pm finish. Just enough darkness to get your night nav fix!

Nerang State Forest is a very scenic and challenging area for off-track exploration, and course setter Leo Theoharis knows the area well and will set a course that has something for everyone. Perfect for novices, families and experienced rogainers alike. Entries will open soon.

2020 Australasian Rogaining Championships – 9/10 May 2020
This year’s championship event will be held near Burra in South Australia, not far from the famous Clare and Barossa wine regions. Like all Australasian Champs, it is open to everyone to enter, you certainly don’t need to be an elite rogainer.
It will be a great event, as always, so put it in your calendar and start making plans! The event map covers beautiful Mallee country only 3 hours drive north of Adelaide, with a complex creek network, deep erosion gullies and spurs, fabulous views from the hilltops and absolutely no spinifex.
Here is a flyer with more information on the area: News update #1
For more information and entries check out the event page.

Intervarsity Champs 2020
The Australian Intervarsity Champs will be held in conjuction with the 2020 ARC on 9/10 May in South Australia, and as usual there will be sponsorship for one Qld university team to have their travel costs paid to represent the state at the event. Email to express interest.

Thanks to everyone who responded to the appeal for volunteers in the last bulletin.
We have a great calendar lined up for 2020. All we need now is enough volunteers to make it all happen!
In 2020, entries for each of the QRA-run events will not open until the organiser of each event is satisfied that they have enough helpers to run the event. Has it been a while since you’ve given up the chance to compete, and put up your hand to help? Please, have a look at the calendar and pick an event to give volunteering a go. You’ll have a great time and learn a lot in the process. As a rule of thumb, if you’ve competed in 5 events without giving up the chance to compete and volunteer, it’s time you helped out.
QRA is completely run by volunteers, and we do need all members (that’s you! i.e. anyone who has participated in a rogaine!) to pitch in to help run our events.
Each QRA event now has a Volunteer Grid on the event page which shows the roles we need to fill before entries can open. Email to enquire about roles and/or put your hand up. Check out the event calendar here.
If you are raising money for a good cause (or maybe even just to fund your adventure racing habit!), QRA can and does pay for some services, most commonly supplying the catering for an event.
As a volunteer you can claim your expenses, which includes a generous per-kilometre rate for your own car usage, food and budget accommodation while course setting, etc.
Thanks for your assistance!
